1. Key takeaways from the month
Between Sep 24 and Oct 23, 2026, games produced record platform numbers rather than record new games: Steam set a concurrency high, spending followed established titles, publishers cut studios and raised prices, and AI tools mostly stayed announcements. Four conclusions explain the month; each points to the chapter that holds the evidence, with figures judged against Oct 24.
1. Steam's records measure engagement and back catalogs, not new-game breakouts. Steam logged 43,505,724 concurrent users on Oct 11 (SteamDB), up 819,108, or +1.9%, on the March record of 42,686,616, yet only 14.46 million of them were in a game, about 33%. The record therefore counts open clients, not players. Alinea Analytics estimates September revenue at about $1.7B, +13% on a year earlier, and says established IP took 79.5% of top-500 revenue. [Chapter 2][Chapter 3]
2. New-release milestones were modest, and the biggest launch is still ahead. Remedy reported that CONTROL Resonant passed 1 million copies on Oct 15, 21 days after its Sep 24 launch, and THQ Nordic reported 500,000 for Fatekeeper in Early Access on Oct 21. AION 2 reached a 397,905 all-time Steam peak on SteamDB, while Grand Theft Auto VI remains announced for Nov 19 with no delay as of Oct 1. Remedy gave no revenue figure for CONTROL Resonant. [Chapter 2][Chapter 4]
3. Money moved to console and PC and away from mobile and Xbox. Sensor Tower puts global mobile spending at $6.13B in September, down 7% on August, and Circana has US spending at $4.8B, down 1% year on year. Within it, mobile fell 14%, console rose 8% and PC rose 27%, with PS5 dollars up 43% against Switch 2 down 12% and Xbox Series down 2%. These trackers use different definitions, so we do not compare their dollars. Honor of Kings led AppMagic's net-revenue ranking at $135M, and Japan's Famitsu data had Switch 2 at 21,854 against 10,667 for the PS5 family in the week of Oct 12-18. [Chapter 3]
4. Publishers cut staff and raised prices while results are still ahead. Electronic Arts confirmed on Oct 21 that BioWare will close, and Bloomberg reported about 400 cuts. Ubisoft proposed on Oct 14 to remove about 222 roles, and US prices stand at $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $799.99 for Xbox Series X and $499.99 for Switch 2. Tencent reports on Nov 18, with analysts expecting revenue +7% to +9%. Take-Two and Remedy report in early November, so most publisher results are still ahead. [Chapter 4]
5. Generative AI shipped in one place and was announced or contested elsewhere. Google's Playground, a prompt-to-game tool, went live on Oct 7 for US adults, while Unity Spark remains a closed-beta announcement. A third-party count finds 2,593 of 7,145 Steam Next Fest games, 36.3%, carry an AI label, and the GDC 2026 survey has 36% of professionals using generative AI against 52% holding a negative view. [Chapter 5]

2. New games and performance
Chapter 1 summarises the month; this chapter supplies the release and player-count evidence behind it, and leaves revenue rankings to Chapter 3 and publisher results to Chapter 4.
2.1 New games at a glance
| Item | Key figure | Date | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam concurrent users | 43,505,724 peak (Valve page: 43,501,449) | Oct 11 | Reported, third-party tracker | SteamDB, Valve (via Windows Forum) |
| AION 2 (NCSoft, free-to-play) | 397,905 all-time peak | Released Oct 5 | Third-party | SteamDB (via Dot Esports) |
| CONTROL Resonant (Remedy) | 1M+ copies | Oct 15 | Publisher-reported | Remedy release |

| Steam Next Fest | Oct 19–26 | Oct 19 | In progress | Valve (via GameBrief) |
2.2 Steam's record: a third of users were in a game
Steam logged 43,505,724 concurrent users on Sunday, Oct 11, 2026 (SteamDB), with the peak at 14:00 UTC. Valve's own statistics page, updated Oct 12, showed 43,501,449 for the last 48 hours. The 4,275 gap (43,505,724 − 43,501,449) is about 0.01%. The previous record was 42,686,616 in March 2026, so the gain is 819,108, or +1.9%. According to shattered.io, March was "roughly 42.5 million" and this was a third record in 2026. We follow the exact SteamDB figure, which two outlets report, and treat the record count as unverified.
The headline counts open clients, not players. KitGuru's reading of SteamDB data puts 14.46 million in a game: 14.46 ÷ 43.51 ≈ 33%, leaving about 29 million connected but not playing. Neither figure counts unique people, since one person on a desktop and a handheld can appear twice.
| October peak (SteamDB, via KitGuru) | Concurrent users |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 31.3M |
| 2024 | 38.1M |
| 2025 | 41.6M |
| 2026 | 43.5M |
Annual growth is slowing: 38.1 ÷ 31.3 − 1 ≈ +21.7%, 41.6 ÷ 38.1 − 1 ≈ +9.2%, 43.5 ÷ 41.6 − 1 ≈ +4.6% (rounded inputs). The cause is unknown: the record came three days after the Autumn Sale ended on Oct 8, and no source ties it to a sale, hardware launch or single game.
Valve's page, captured Oct 12, shows who filled the day (daily peaks, one source):
| Game | Daily peak (Valve, Oct 12) |
|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | 1,404,227 |
| Dota 2 | 1,034,502 |
| PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS | 713,683 |
| AION 2 | 392,300 |
| Apex Legends | 233,682 |
| WARDOGS | 199,487 |
Of these six, only AION 2 and WARDOGS are 2026 launches. AION 2's 392,300 is about 28% of Counter-Strike 2's (392,300 ÷ 1,404,227). Its SteamDB all-time peak of 397,905 is a different measure and is not compared with Valve's daily figure.
Steam's record is real but measures platform engagement: two-thirds of users were not in a game, and the busiest titles are long-running free-to-play staples. Among 2026 launches, only AION 2 and WARDOGS reached six-figure daily peaks.
2.3 Launches and publisher milestones
Releases dated Oct 1–23 (per Pure Xbox's Xbox listing) include Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (Oct 1), Gears of War: E-Day and Star Wars: Galactic Racer (Oct 6), Planet Zoo 2 (Oct 13), Castlevania: Belmont's Curse (Oct 15), Final Fantasy Resonance (Oct 22) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (Oct 23). PC Gamer also dates Enshrouded 1.0 to Oct 15, and GameGrin's Steam list shows it as new. Marvel's Wolverine (PS5) launched Sep 15, before the window; its US ranking is in Chapter 3.
Date conflicts: Steam pages show EA SPORTS FC 27 on Sep 24, while Onaudience lists Sep 25; we follow Steam for PC. GameGrin's Steam list shows Modern Warfare 4 on Oct 22, while Pure Xbox and Onaudience say Oct 23; we follow Oct 23.
Early Steam demand is visible in rankings. In SteamDB's week of Sep 22–29, EA SPORTS FC 27 ranked first, WARDOGS third and CONTROL Resonant fourth; Ace Combat 8 was eighth ahead of its Oct 1 release, and Gears of War: E-Day was 63rd ahead of Oct 6. For Oct 13–20, GameGrin lists PUBG, Modern Warfare 4, Dota 2, AION 2 and Counter-Strike 2 in that order, with Planet Zoo 2 and Enshrouded among the entries. GameGrin prints no rank numbers, so the order is inferred; the two weeks come from different outlets and are not compared.
Publisher-reported sales milestones are modest. Remedy announced on Oct 15 that CONTROL Resonant (launched Sep 24; PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC) passed one million copies, the fastest-selling game in its 31-year history; Sep 24 to Oct 15 is 21 days. CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon called it "a very strong start". PC Gamer notes that Alan Wake 2 needed two months, but Blood of Dawnwalker reached a million in three days and WARDOGS in one (PC Gamer's comparisons, no source stated). Remedy gave no revenue; its Q3 review is on Nov 3. On Oct 21, THQ Nordic said Fatekeeper, made by a 13-person studio, passed 500,000 copies while in Early Access on Steam at $9.99.
GameDev Reports' Oct 12–16 recap headlines a million-copy "Star Wars Zero Company" milestone, but publisher, date and platform are not given. The material has no review scores and no Deadlock peak, so launches are not ranked by reception.
2.4 Next Fest and what follows
Steam's Autumn Sale ran Oct 1–8 (10 a.m. PT). Steam Next Fest runs Oct 19 at 10:00 PDT to Oct 26 at 10:00 PDT (17:00 UTC), per Valve's Steamworks page as quoted by GameBrief. The press preview began Oct 8, every game must launch after Oct 26, and Valve publishes a most-played-demos wrap-up on Oct 26. ScreenRant counts over 7,000 demos, and UploadVR lists more than 40 PC VR demos. Valve's own count and wishlist data are absent from the material. GamingOnLinux says low-effort games crowd the event, an opinion, not data. The next one is planned for February 2027.
Dated launches after the window: Emberville Early Access Oct 27, Curse of Resthaven Oct 29, Phantom Blade Zero Oct 29 (Onaudience; GameGrin's Steam entry says Sep 8, which conflicts, and we follow Oct 29), Inside Job Early Access Nov 2, Loftia Early Access Nov 3, and GTA VI Nov 19 (Chapter 4). Steam Scream V Fest runs Oct 26–Nov 2 and the Winter Sale Dec 17–Jan 4.
3. Revenue charts
Chapter 2 counted launches and players; this chapter follows the money, and September 2026 split it: premium console and PC spending held up, while mobile and most hardware fell.
3.1 September 2026 at a glance
| Item | Key figure | Date / period | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Global mobile game spending (App Store + Google Play, gross) | $6.13B, -7% MoM | Sept 2026 | Third-party estimate | Sensor Tower |
| Top mobile game by revenue | Honor of Kings $135M (net) | Sept 2026 | Third-party estimate | AppMagic via GameDevReports |
| US spending, content + hardware + accessories | $4.8B, -1% YoY | Aug 30-Oct 3, 2026 (published Oct 22) | Reported | Circana via Kotaku |
| US hardware spending | $362M, +12% YoY | same | Reported | Circana via GamesIndustry.biz |
| US No. 1 game | Marvel's Wolverine (rank only) | same | Reported | Circana via GamesIndustry.biz |
| Japan weekly hardware | Switch 2 21,854 vs PS5 family 10,667 | Oct 12-18, 2026 | Reported | Famitsu via Gematsu |
| Steam revenue | ~$1.7B, +13% YoY | Sept 2026 | Estimate | Alinea Analytics via Tom's Hardware |
| China licences | 209 approved | batch published Sept 30 | Reported by one outlet | tech-insider.org |
September's growth sat in PC, in PS5 and in back catalogs. Mobile, Xbox and Switch 2 were soft, and the record Steam month was built mostly on established games.
3.2 Mobile: one leader, a shrinking mid-table
Sensor Tower and AppMagic measure different things, so they are kept apart. Sensor Tower counts gross consumer spending on the App Store and Google Play (third-party Android excluded): $6.13 billion in September, -7% month on month. The US took 28.7%, China (iOS only) 15.7% and Japan 12.4%. The US share is 6.13 × 0.287 ≈ $1.76B (computed). Its top five were Honor of Kings, Roblox, Gossip Harbor, Candy Crush Saga and MONOPOLY GO!.
AppMagic's figures are net of store commission and taxes, with China's Android stores excluded:
| Rank | Game | Sept revenue | vs Aug |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Honor of Kings | $135M | -12% |
| 2 | Gossip Harbor | $99.1M | -12% |
| 3 | Roblox | $98M | about -3% (vs $100.6M) |
| 4 | Royal Match | $91.3M | -16% |
| 5 | MONOPOLY GO! | $81.5M | not stated |
| 6 | Whiteout Survival | $78.8M | -19% |
| 8 | Kingshot | $64.2M | -18% |
| 9 | Pokemon GO | $61.9M | +23% |
| 10 | PUBG MOBILE | $55.2M | -50% |
Source for all rows: AppMagic via GameDevReports. Mobilegamer.biz, also quoting AppMagic, matches these figures.
Honor of Kings was the only game above $100M; five games passed it in August. Its lead over Gossip Harbor is 135 - 99.1 = $35.9M, in line with mobilegamer.biz's "$35m". The -12% follows two months above $150M, after China's summer holidays ended. Three cases stand out:
- PUBG MOBILE fell from third to tenth.
- Last War: Survival ($43.2M) has dropped six months running and is 43.2 / 128.2 ≈ 34% of its February level.
- eFootball ($41.2M, -29%) keeps fading after a record $69.9M in July.
Conflict: Gamesforum, citing AppMagic and dated Sept 28 (before the month closed), lists lower values: $113.9M, $87.3M, $85.1M, $81.3M and $69.3M for the top five. We follow the later and more detailed figures. Sensor Tower and AppMagic also order the top five differently (Roblox second versus third), which fits their different definitions; their dollar values are not comparable.
3.3 US and Japan: PS5 up, Switch 2 and Xbox down
Circana tracks US content, hardware and accessories. Total spending fell 1% to $4.8B and year to date is $41.0B, -3%. Content (software, including mobile) fell 2% to $4.2B: mobile -14%, console +8%, PC +27%. Hardware spending rose to $362M, but year to date it is $2.91B, -9%. Circana's game rankings exclude mobile and add-on content.
| US hardware, Sept 2026 YoY | Units | Dollars | Implied price per unit (computed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | +22% | +43% | 1.43 / 1.22 = +17% |
| Switch 2 | -14% | -12% | 0.88 / 0.86 = +2% |
| Xbox Series | -27% | -2% | 0.98 / 0.73 = +34% |
Source: Circana via GamesIndustry.biz and Kotaku. The last column uses rounded percentages and is only indicative. Kotaku attributes the Xbox and Switch 2 weakness partly to price rises (see Chapter 4).
Marvel's Wolverine (Sony) was No. 1, followed by NBA 2K27, EA Sports FC 27, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and The Blood of Dawnwalker. Circana said it was the highest launch-month full-game dollar sales for a Sony-published title since Helldivers II in February 2024. The material gives no dollar or copy figure, so the chart is a ranking only. NBA 2K27 leads 2026 year to date, ahead of Resident Evil Requiem.
Famitsu's Japan hardware data is weekly sell-through; its software data covers physical copies only:
| Week (2026) | Switch 2 | PS5 family | Switch family | Xbox Series |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 28-Oct 4 | 26,200 | 12,768 | 7,704 | 612 |
| Oct 5-11 | 22,420 | 11,911 | 5,806 | 290 |
| Oct 12-18 | 21,854 | 10,667 | 4,857 | 229 |
For Oct 5-11, family totals are summed from the model lines (PS5: 11,611 + 161 + 139). Over three weeks Switch 2 sold 70,474 against 35,346 for the PS5 family, about 2.0× (computed). Switch 2 lifetime sales in Japan were 6,408,973 as of Oct 11. Ace Combat 8 opened at 63,013 on PS5 in the week to Oct 4.
3.4 Steam, China and market totals
Steam's figures are estimates by Alinea Analytics; Valve publishes no sales data. Alinea puts September at $1.7B gross (including free-to-play), +13% on the previous September record. That implies about $1.5B a year earlier (1.7 / 1.13). Q3 was $5.5B (+12%) and January-September $16.5B against $14.5B, +13.8% (16.5 / 14.5 - 1). A $20B year needs only 20 - 16.5 = $3.5B in Q4; if Q4 merely matches Q3, 2026 closes near $22.0B (computed).
The record is mostly catalog. Established IP took 79.5% of top-500 revenue, new IP 20.5%, and games released in 2026 33.6%. Free-to-play was 16% of top-500 titles but 25.6% of revenue. Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG and Dota 2 together made nearly $168M, 168 / 1,700 ≈ 9.9%. Top paid games were Wardogs ($86.9M, early access from Sept 10), Onimusha: Way of the Sword ($30.4M), The Blood of Dawnwalker ($26.9M), Bodycam ($24.2M) and EA Sports FC 27 ($20.7M).
China, with one outlet as source: tech-insider.org says the NPPA published its September batch on Sept 30: 206 domestic and 3 imported games, 209 in total, and 1,571 year to date against 1,771 for all of 2025. Its ~2,300 full-year projection (estimate) needs 2,300 - 1,571 = 729 in Q4, or about 243 a month, above September's 209. Sensor Tower data via BigGo (date not stated) put 37 Chinese publishers in the global top 100, with $2B, 41.6% of that chart; Tencent stayed first. For the market, Niko Partners puts 2025 player spending at $51.8B and projects $53.9B for 2026 (estimate). CADPA reports H1 2026 domestic revenue of 188.45B yuan (+12.17%); the two use different methods. Aream & Co., which does not name its tracker in the excerpt, cites Q3 2026 mobile IAP of $19.6B (-7% YoY).
4. Publisher news
Chapter 3 showed where consumer money went; this chapter covers what publishers did about it: studio closures, higher console prices and a launch date that held.
4.1 Publisher news at a glance
| Item | Key figure | Date | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EA closes BioWare | ~400 cuts, ~50 at BioWare | Oct 21 | Closure confirmed; headcount reported | Game Informer |

| Q3 games M&A | $57.8bn, including EA's $55bn | Q3 2026 | Reported | GamesIndustry.biz |
4.2 Closures, layoffs and deal flow
EA and Ubisoft cut studios outside their core franchises in the same month. EA's cuts came 78 days after its buyout closed.
EA. On Oct 21, a staff letter from COO David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber announced the closure of BioWare and its Edmonton workspace, ending early development of the next Mass Effect. That is company-confirmed; the headcount is not. Bloomberg reported about 400 cuts, roughly 3% of staff, with about 50 at BioWare, and EA published no figure. With 14,600 employees (EA's FY2026 10-K, via Admiral Markets) the share is 400 ÷ 14,600 ≈ 2.7%; GamesBeat's 14,500 gives 2.8%.
An anonymous source, via Refolk, places the other ~350 at Maxis, Full Circle and Ripple Effect; EA has not named them. The Sims project "Lotus" is paused (several reports say cancelled) and the skate. team shrinks, while Battlefield, Apex Legends and Motive's Iron Man game continue.
EA went private on Aug 4 in a $55 billion buyout at $210 a share, according to Admiral Markets. Its new debt is about $18bn (Octus, via Admiral Markets) or about $20bn (TechPowerUp, Refolk); read it as $18–20bn. EA's Global Town Hall is announced for November.
Ubisoft. According to tech-insider.org, citing GamesIndustry.biz and IGN, Ubisoft proposed on Oct 14 to close RedLynx (Trials), affecting up to 52 positions pending Finnish change negotiations, to cut about 70 roles at its Singapore studio, and to offer voluntary departures for about 100 roles in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Mainz: 52 + 70 + 100 = 222. GamesIndustry.biz headlines confirm both actions. Guillemot tied this to €200 million of additional cost cuts. All are proposals.
Fishlabs, Gamepires and Funcom layoffs appear only as headlines.
Deals. Aream & Co counts $57.8bn of Q3 2026 games M&A, including EA's $55bn buyout, which it books on its August completion date. PocketGamer.biz, via tech-insider.org, counts $2.4bn across 45 deals. Scopes differ, so we do not net them; we use Aream's.
4.3 Take-Two, Nintendo and console prices
GTA VI. Rockstar set Nov 19, 2026 on Nov 6, 2025, moving the game from May 26, 2026. It was reaffirmed on May 21, Jul 17 and Aug 7 (results). On Sep 24 Rockstar scheduled Vice City Collection merchandise for Nov 19, and ExpCarry found no delay as of Oct 1. Preload starts Nov 12 and PC is unannounced. The material has no Take-Two filing, so these dates come from two trackers quoting the company (status: announced).
Take-Two's FY2027 guidance (year to Mar 31, 2027) is GAAP net revenue of $7.9–8.1bn, and Q2 net revenue of $1.42–1.47bn with a $140–157m net loss. Net bookings guidance of $8.0–8.2bn (GTASIX) is a different measure. Q2 is tentatively due Nov 5. Jefferies (Oct 14, estimate): FY2027 GTA VI bookings of $2.5bn rise to $2.9bn if PC arrives in the final quarter, since 35M console + 12M PC = 47M units versus 40M. PC is unannounced; GamesBeat's Q1 2027 timing is a report.
Nintendo (context, Aug 6). Net sales were ¥517.8bn (-9.5%) and operating profit ¥142.5bn against ¥56.9bn. Switch 2 sold 3.82M units (-34.4% against a launch quarter); lifetime shipments are 23.68M. According to shattered.io, Nintendo booked about $300m (¥47bn) of US tariff refunds against cost of sales. If it all fell in operating profit, the underlying figure is 142.5 - 47 = ¥95.5bn, still +68%. The forecast of 16.5M units implies a prior year of 16.5 ÷ 0.831 ≈ 19.86M, which matches 23.68 - 3.82. Nintendo's next results date is not stated.
Price changes (in effect). Sony's PS5 Pro rose on Apr 2, Microsoft's Series X on Aug 1 (announced Jun 25) and Nintendo's Switch 2 on Sep 1. BigGo's $749 Series X is the digital model; we use SKU-level sources.
| Console (US) | Launch | Current | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | $699.99 | $899.99 | +28.6% |
| Xbox Series X (disc) | $499 | $799.99 | +60.3% |
| Switch 2 | $449.99 | $499.99 | +11.1% |
Source: tech-insider.org; change = (current - launch) ÷ launch.
Prices rose while US Xbox Series and Switch 2 units fell in September, though PS5 units still rose 22% (see Chapter 3). Sony's Hideaki Nishino said in June, "we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses"; a $1,200–1,800 price for Microsoft's Helix is a rumour.
4.4 Asian publishers: Q3 results still ahead
The material has no Q3 result from Tencent, Sony, Microsoft or the Korean publishers, and no NetEase coverage. Figures below are estimates.
Tencent reports on Nov 18. UBS and GF Securities expect revenue +7% to +9%, domestic games +12% to +13%, overseas games -3% to -6%, and adjusted operating profit -2% to -4% as AI costs of about CNY 16bn weigh.
| Publisher | Q3 sales | Q3 operating profit | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krafton | 1.17tn won | 300.2bn won | FnGuide estimate |
| NC | 701bn won | 98bn won | FnGuide estimate |
| Netmarble | 639bn won | 78.6bn won | FnGuide estimate |
Source: Chosunbiz.
Krafton's Q2 actual was 1.2902tn won and 410.9bn won, so the Q3 estimate is down 9.3% in sales and 26.9% in profit, and the margin falls from 31.8% to 25.7%. Nexon's own Q3 guidance is ¥120.7–133.4bn in sales and ¥22.6–32.3bn in operating profit (down 14% to 40%), citing royalties, cloud costs and marketing. KOCCA's Q3 game business index was 98.1, below the neutral 100. Kakao Games is forecast to lose 28.8bn won. Costs and release gaps drive the squeeze.
5. AI and games
Chapter 4 covered publisher results and job cuts; this chapter covers the technology several of those publishers are betting on, and separates what shipped in the window from what was only announced, reported or posted.
5.1 AI items at a glance
| Item | Key figure | Date | Status (as of Oct 24, 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Playground | Prompt-to-game, US only, 18+ | Oct 7, 2026 | Shipping (experimental) | Google (via Progressive Robot); Fortune |
| Unity Spark | Closed beta; no export, download or sale | "Later in 2026", date not stated | Announced | Unity (via shattered.io) |
| Meta Horizon Create / Studio | Generate 2D and 3D games | Connect, Sept 23–24 | Announced, waitlist | gamenewsplus.net |
| Epic "AI first" push | Disney project; developers told to go "AI first" | Oct 13 (headline) | Reported | TechPowerUp; GamesIndustry.biz |
| Steam Next Fest AI labels | 2,593 of 7,145 games | Oct 19–26 | Third-party tally, provisional | PC Guide (SteamDB) |
| GDC 2026 survey | 36% use genAI; 52% see harm | 2026, date not stated | Survey | G2A News |
| SAG-AFTRA TV animation deal | 3% a year for four years | Vote closes Oct 29 | Pending (not a games contract) | Cartoon Brew |
Only one generative game tool went live in the window, Google's Playground. Most other AI news was an announcement, a press report or a personal demo, and the loudest data point, Steam's AI label count, is a third-party tally.
5.2 Shipped versus announced
Google Playground went live on Oct 7, 2026 from Google Labs at playground.google, for US users aged 18 and over. Google calls it "an early experiment". A spokesperson says it runs on Gemini, Nano Banana (images) and Lyria (music) with a custom harness. Playing is free, and creating uses weekly tokens. The Export button downloads a zip of the game's HTML, JavaScript, CSS and assets. Fortune also dates the launch to Oct 7.
Unity Spark is the announced half. Unity says it will arrive "later this year", and GamesIndustry.biz (via shattered.io) reports a closed beta with no export, download or sale, run on AI-token credits whose prices are undisclosed. One aggregator, emergent.sh, instead describes a "launched" Google-Unity platform in early access with tiered pricing and 40–60% faster iteration. We do not follow it, because it conflicts with Unity's press release as quoted by shattered.io, and with Fortune and Progressive Robot, which describe Playground live and Spark still to come. Meta said at Connect (Sept 23–24) that Horizon Create and Horizon Studio will build 2D and 3D games, with gradual early access and no price (according to gamenewsplus.net).
Epic. TechPowerUp's headline list dates "Epic Games Switches to AI-First Game Development Starting with Unannounced Disney Shooter" to Oct 13, and GamesIndustry.biz headlines that Epic "delays Disney game and tells developers to go 'AI first'" (date not stated). The AI and Games newsletter (Oct 21) traces the story to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, describing a Disney collaboration in development for a couple of years. The material holds no Epic statement, so this is reported, not confirmed.
Smaller signals.
- On Oct 19 Brandon Stirrup, a senior business strategy manager in Xbox, posted that he built a rough football game in three hours using Unreal Engine and MCP tools (according to Tech Insider). It was a personal post, not a Microsoft product or policy.
- Razer's AVA desk companion, powered by xAI's Grok, "has yet to be publicly released" (Fortune, Oct 14), and CEO Min-Liang Tan's claim that AI will make gaming "a trillion dollar" industry is an opinion, not a forecast we can verify.
- Krafton's PUBG Ally NPC teammates had a public beta earlier this year, before the window.
- Rockstar's Rob Nelson said Grand Theft Auto VI will have no generative AI "at launch" (Aug 27, context only; according to gtasix.org).
5.3 Disclosure rules and developer sentiment
Valve's rule dates from Jan 9, 2024. Developers must describe Pre-Generated and Live-Generated AI use, and Live-Generated content needs guardrails. The declaration is written by the developer and Valve publishes much of it on the store page. No automated tool checks it.
For Steam Next Fest (Oct 19–26, still running), SteamDB figures reported by PC Guide count 7,145 games, 4,552 without an AI label and so 2,593 with one: 2,593 ÷ 7,145 = 36.3%. TheGamer, via Famiboards, gives 4,549 and 2,595. Three limits apply:
- It is a third-party count. Digital Citizen notes that Valve has never published a disclosure count.
- The June comparison ("nearly 20%") has no published denominator, and another count put June at 11%.
- The "absolutely ruined" quote traces to one unverified Reddit thread.
Developer surveys measure different things, so we list them separately and do not rank them:
| Survey (definition) | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| GDC 2026: professionals using genAI at work | 36% (studios 30%, publishing and support 58%) | Jabali AI |
| GDC: negative view of genAI's industry impact | 18% (2024), 30% (2025), 52% (2026) | Jabali AI |
| GDC 2026: AI users who use it for research and brainstorming | 81% (code assistance 47%, prototyping 35%) | Jabali AI |
| Quantic Foundry: players with a less-than-neutral view of genAI | 85% | Tech Insider |
| Vivrato: studio leaders using AI in some form (EU, North America) | 97% | GamesIndustry.biz headline |
From 2024 to 2026, negative sentiment rose 52 − 18 = 34 points while personal use is 36%. Concern is highest among visual and technical artists (64%). Studios are adopting a tool that many of their own staff distrust.
Platform rules are converging on disclosure over bans. Flathub, the main app source in SteamOS Desktop Mode, replaced its near-ban of May with a policy amended Sept 4 and reported Oct 8. Submitters must disclose AI-generated material, manifests must contain none, and reviewers may still reject.
5.4 Voice actors and legal items
No new video-game voice agreement appears in the material. The operative one is SAG-AFTRA's interactive agreement, ratified July 9, 2025 by 95.04% of voting members, which requires consent and disclosure for AI replicas (in effect; context, via The Voice Realm). The new item is a tentative four-year TV animation deal with 3% annual raises and expanded AI protections. Voting closes Oct 29 at 5 p.m. PT (pending). It covers animation, not games.
Elsewhere, GamesIndustry.biz headlines (dates not stated) report Japan Actors Union guidelines on unauthorised genAI voice replication, and UKIE with Sheridans launching an AI compliance service for UK studios. The law is moving too (via The Voice Realm):
- The NO FAKES Act cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 18, 2026 (not yet law).
- EU AI Act Article 50 has been in force since Aug 2, 2026, and requires synthetic audio to be marked.
- In the National Association of Voice Actors' 2026 survey, 21% said they lost work to AI, up from 14%.
For studios, shipping AI voices now risks both union and legal exposure.
The material has no Nvidia ACE or Xbox Muse item for the window.
6. Next month
Chapters 2 to 5 described a month of records in engagement, soft spending in mobile and on two consoles, cuts at two large publishers and little shipped AI. This chapter turns them into what changes for each reader and a dated calendar, and it adds no new facts.
6.1 What changed and what it means by reader
| Reader | What changed | Implication | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Players | US prices are $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $799.99 for Xbox Series X and $499.99 for Switch 2; Steam Next Fest runs to Oct 26 with 7,000+ demos; Modern Warfare 4 released Oct 23 | Budget for higher hardware prices; try demos before the fest ends; GTA VI is announced only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | — |
| Developers | Established IP took 79.5% of Steam top-500 revenue and 2026 releases 33.6%; 36.3% of Next Fest games carry an AI label; Valve's disclosure rule dates from Jan 9, 2024 | New games compete with catalogs, and AI disclosure is routine on Steam | — |
| Investors | Mobile spending fell 7% month on month while PS5 dollars rose 43%; EA and Ubisoft cut roles; Q3 results are scheduled | Read results against the estimates already published, which are not company guidance | — |
| Studios and performers using AI | Google Playground shipped; Unity Spark and Meta Horizon tools are announced; SAG-AFTRA's TV animation vote closes Oct 29 | Separate shipped tools from announcements; the vote concerns animation, not games | — |
The month's records came from engagement and catalogs, not breakout launches, so the dated events through Nov 19, from Q3 results to GTA VI, are what will show whether publishers turn that into earnings.
6.2 What to watch by theme
Releases. Steam Next Fest ends on Oct 26, and Valve publishes a most-played-demos wrap-up that day. Emberville enters Early Access on Oct 27, Curse of Resthaven launches on Oct 29, Inside Job enters Early Access on Nov 2 and Loftia on Nov 3. Phantom Blade Zero is announced for Oct 29 by Onaudience, while GameGrin's Steam entry says Sep 8, and we follow Oct 29. GTA VI follows on Nov 19, with preload from Nov 12, and PC is unannounced. The material has no first-week sales for Modern Warfare 4, so none are assumed.
Earnings. Remedy's Q3 review is on Nov 3. Take-Two's Q2 is tentatively due Nov 5, and company guidance is net revenue of $1.42-1.47bn for the quarter and $7.9-8.1bn for FY2027. Tencent reports on Nov 18, and the published expectation of revenue +7% to +9% is an analyst estimate. Chosunbiz estimates Krafton's Q3 sales at 1.17tn won, 9.3% below its Q2 actual of 1.2902tn won, with report dates not stated. The material has no NetEase coverage, and Nintendo's next results date is not stated.
Events and policy. SAG-AFTRA's vote on the TV animation deal closes Oct 29 at 5 p.m. PT. Unity says Spark will arrive later in 2026, and EA's Global Town Hall is announced for November, with no day stated. Steam's Scream V Fest runs Oct 26 to Nov 2 and the Winter Sale starts on Dec 17.
Data to compare. Next month's figures should be read like for like: SteamDB with SteamDB, Circana with Circana, and AppMagic net revenue with AppMagic, because the trackers' definitions differ.
6.3 Key dates
Dates already past on Oct 24, 2026 are marked "In effect"; later dates are "Upcoming".
