1. Key takeaways from the week
Between Oct 17 and Oct 23, 2026, AI financing was loud at the top and thin beneath it. Five conclusions explain the week; each is supported in the chapter named in brackets, with deals judged against Oct 24.
1. Two unfinished deals make up most of the headline. This report tracks 14 deals. Ten announced rounds with a disclosed amount total $3,461M; adding DeepSeek's reported ~$14.98B gives $18,441M, and OpenAI's talks for up to $30B bring the headline to $48,441M, of which only 7.1% is announced. The tracked set is not the market total. [Chapters 2, 3]
2. Valuations stepped up sharply, but the biggest mark moved down. OpenAI's talks are at $1.25T pre-money, which is 1.47x the March $852B but $150B below the $1.4T Reuters reported on Oct 19. Whop rose from $1.6B to $5.1B, Tenstorrent from $2.6B to $6.2B, and Fireworks AI is in talks at $30–40B against $17.5B in July. [Chapters 3, 4, 7]
3. Chips and growth-stage rounds took the announced dollars. Of the $3,461M announced, Tenstorrent's $1.5B Series E is 43.3%, and Series D–E rounds hold 68.8%; 76.9% went to US-headquartered companies. Applications are priced richly on revenue: Legora at most 44x ARR and Whop about 13x. [Chapter 4]
4. M&A was strategic and mostly small; the largest deal was an accounting disclosure. Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for $47.50 a share in cash (enterprise value about $5.66B, a 58% premium). SpaceX's Oct 20 release split the Cursor deal into a $60B headline, $42.5B of purchase consideration and $23.4B of retention equity awards. [Chapter 5]
5. The exit window is narrow and Anthropic is its test. A reported draft S-1 shows $16.3B of first-half revenue and an $80.7B net loss, $72B of it a non-cash charge. Kalshi gave Anthropic 75% odds of announcing an IPO in 2026 and OpenAI 3%, and the Nasdaq 100 was down 6.5% since Oct 6. [Chapters 6, 7]

2. The week in numbers
Chapter 1 gave the week's conclusions; this chapter puts numbers under them, from the quarterly market data down to the deals this report tracks.
2.1 Market context: concentrated AI money, fewer deals
According to CB Insights' State of Venture Q3 2026 (via Fintech News Switzerland), global venture funding was $187.2B in Q3 and $698.3B year to date, up 108.9% on the same period of 2025, while Q3 deal count fell to a record-low 6,913. AI startups raised $495.5B in the first three quarters, so 495.5 ÷ 698.3 = 71% of all venture dollars. The average AI round is $91.3M in 2026 YTD against $31.7M in 2025 (+188%); across all sectors it is $49.8M against $23M.
| CB Insights split (one source) | Amount | Share |
|---|---|---|
| AI funding, 2026 YTD | $495.5B | 71% |
| Non-AI funding, 2026 YTD (698.3 − 495.5) | $202.8B | 29% |
| Q3 mega-rounds of $100M+ (299 deals) | $149.2B | 80% |
| Q3 all other deals (187.2 − 149.2) | $38.0B | 20% |
Source: CB Insights via Fintech News Switzerland.
Fewer deals, bigger checks: 299 of 6,913 Q3 deals (4.3%) took about 80% of the dollars, and AI took 71% of the year's total.
Two cautions. First, the write-up's headline says Asia took "31%" of Q3 activity at $36.2B. But 36.2 ÷ 187.2 = 19% of dollars, while 2,153 ÷ 6,913 = 31% of deals, so we read 31% as the deal share. Second, other sources disagree on the base. PitchBook (via TheVentureCity, date not stated) has Q3 at $170.8B over 8,368 deals, down 29% QoQ. CropLife, quoting CB Insights, gives different QoQ changes (funding −12%, deals −2.4%) from the 23% deal decline above. Definitions are not given, so we use CB Insights levels, the only source with an AI share, and avoid QoQ changes. The two sources agree on the direction. The New York Business Journal (Oct 19) reports US AI startups at $426.7B across 5,325 deals YTD, 82.7% of US deal value (provider not stated). That implies a US total of 426.7 ÷ 0.827 ≈ $516B.
ION Analytics' Mergermarket data (Oct 20) show AI M&A plus fundraising at $450B in nine months, triple a year earlier. Funding rounds were 74% of it (0.74 × 450 ≈ $333B, leaving about $117B of M&A), but June–September M&A was 73% of dollar volume, and funding rounds were still about 60% of deal count. This scope differs from CB Insights' $495.5B venture-only figure, so do not add or compare them. Crunchbase carried only a guest opinion piece (Oct 22), not weekly data. It cites Gartner's view that AI data centers earn at most $3.6T through 2030 against $8.5T needed.
2.2 The week day by day
| Date (2026) | Notable announcements | Source |

| Fri Oct 23 | Higgsfield: Nvidia and TCV extend its Series B, amount undisclosed | — |
Tech Startups called Oct 21 "more than $1.34 billion" of new financing in 24 hours; excluding Otter's repayable $320M leaves $1.0285B of disclosed dollar equity rounds. Whop's own release says $200M, while outlets say $205M. We follow the release. Arda's "$230M" (CNBC) is total funding and the Series A is $160M; the tracked sum uses $230M.
2.3 What this report tracks
The table covers 14 tracked deals: ten announced with a disclosed amount, plus DeepSeek, OpenAI, Fireworks AI and Higgsfield. It is not the market total: it omits other roundup deals and Otter.ai's repayable $320M.
| Status (judged 2026-10-24) | Count | Deals ($M) | Sum ($M) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Announced, company release in material | 4 | Tenstorrent 1,500 + Legora 550 + Whop 200 + Tractian 130 | 2,380 |
| Announced, secondary coverage only | 6 | ASI 325 + Pigment 250 + Arda 230 + Eka Robotics 150 + Blacksmith 66 + Daytona 60 | 1,081 |
| Announced subtotal | 10 | 2,380 + 1,081 | 3,461 |
| Reported (Reuters sources) | 1 | DeepSeek ~14,980 (100B yuan) | 14,980 |
| Announced + reported | 11 | 3,461 + 14,980 | 18,441 |
| In talks | 1 | OpenAI, up to 30,000 | 30,000 |
| Headline sum with amounts | 12 | 18,441 + 30,000 | 48,441 |
| No amount | 2 | Fireworks AI (talks at $30–40B valuation), Higgsfield (undisclosed) | n/a |
Sources:. DeepSeek's terms could still change before closing. For Arda the sum uses CNBC's $230M total funding, not the $160M Series A.
Announced rounds are 3,461 ÷ 48,441 = 7.1% of the headline sum. DeepSeek is 14,980 ÷ 48,441 = 30.9% and OpenAI is 30,000 ÷ 48,441 = 61.9%, and both are unconfirmed. The total therefore rests on two press reports, and OpenAI's valuation is itself contested: CNBC says $1.25T pre-money, while Reuters on Oct 19 said above $1.4T. We follow the later CNBC figure. Modal's $750M Series D (announced Oct 14) is before the window and is context only. Three acquisitions total 5,660 + 675 + 30 = $6,365M (Braze is enterprise value); they are not added to the financings above (see Chapter 5).
3. Top 10 deals
Chapter 2 sized the week's funding; this chapter ranks the ten largest deals inside it by disclosed amount only, and labels each as announced, reported or in talks (status judged on 2026-10-24).
3.1 Ranking by disclosed amount
| # | Company | Amount | Round | Lead | Valuation | Prior valuation | Status, date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | OpenAI | up to $30B | not stated | UAE investors with Coatue | $1.25T pre-money | $852B post-money (Mar 2026) | In talks, Oct 22 | CNBC |

| 10 | Tractian | $130M | Series D | Sapphire Ventures | $1.4B | $720M (Dec 2024) | Announced, Oct 22 | Tractian; BRZ News |
Amounts are as first disclosed. Otter.ai's $320M from General Catalyst is excluded because it is a repayable facility, not equity. Below the cut-off or without a disclosed amount:
| Company | Disclosed | Status, date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith | $66M Series C at $1B (prior $550M); Sequoia lead | Announced, date not stated | TFN |
| Daytona | $60M Series B at $1B; FirstMark Growth lead; prior valuation not stated | Announced, Oct 20 | TFN |
| Higgsfield | amount and valuation not disclosed; Nvidia and TCV extend an August Series B | Announced, Oct 23 | BigGo; ref_136 |
| Fireworks AI | amount not stated; talks at $30–40B vs $17.5B in July | In talks | Business Insider |
3.2 The three largest in detail
OpenAI (in talks). CNBC reported on Oct 22 that OpenAI is raising up to $30B at a $1.25T valuation that excludes the new capital, with UAE investors leading alongside Coatue. OpenAI told investors it wants signatures by the end of the following week, and the final size is still open. This lowers Reuters' Oct 19 figure of more than $1.4T. Bloomberg describes a $150B cut during the final stage of talks, and says details could change. We follow the later $1.25T figure. The step-up is 1,250 ÷ 852 ≈ 1.47x, or +47%, against the March post-money. At $1.4T it would have been +64% (1,400 ÷ 852). OpenAI is also negotiating a commercial deal for more UAE computing capacity. IPO timing is covered in Chapter 6.
DeepSeek (reported). Reuters reports about 100 billion yuan ($14.98B) from more than 15 investors, including GigaDevice, Meituan and Geely. CATL and Tencent, both existing shareholders, were among the biggest. The round doubled the 50 billion yuan target. Pre-money is 500 billion yuan; at the Reuters rate of 6.6749, that is about $74.9B, which outlets round to $74B. Post-money is 500 + 100 = 600 billion yuan, about $89B. The prior mark was 350.88 billion yuan from the June round, which raised $7.4B, so pre-money rose 500 ÷ 350.88 ≈ 1.43x, or +43%. Terms are "not ironclad", and there is no company statement.
Tenstorrent (announced). The company announced $1.5B at a $6.2B post-money valuation on Oct 19, led by Trace Capital and Innovation X. Participants include Fidelity, Morgan Stanley and Sandisk. The valuation is 6.2 ÷ 2.6 ≈ 2.4x the 2024 round. Bloomberg says Tenstorrent held sale talks with Intel and Qualcomm earlier this year and chose to raise instead.
Of the $48.3B across the ten rows (30,000 + 14,980 + 3,335 = 48,315 in $M), $44.98B, or 93%, is reported or in talks. Only $3.335B (7%) is announced.
3.3 Confirmed, reported and in talks
Counting the ten rows, the split is eight announced, one reported and one in talks. The announced total is 1,500 + 550 + 325 + 250 + 230 + 200 + 150 + 130 = $3,335M, and 3,335 ÷ 48,315 ≈ 6.9%. Adding Blacksmith ($66M) and Daytona ($60M) gives $3,461M announced across the tracked set; with DeepSeek that is $18,441M, and with OpenAI's $30,000M in talks the headline is $48,441M.
- Company-sourced: Tenstorrent, Legora, Whop and Tractian published their own releases, and Arda gave its figures to CNBC.
- Aggregator only: ASI, Pigment and Eka Robotics appear only in one Tech Startups roundup. Treat their rows as leads to verify.
- Reported: DeepSeek has no company statement, and Reuters says the lineup could still change.
- In talks: OpenAI's valuation has already moved once.
Three figures conflict, and one deal is context only. Whop's release says $200M; Bloomberg says $205M. We follow the release. Arda told CNBC $230M, while TNW puts $232M total with a $160M Series A. We rank on $230M. Using $160M would swap Arda and Whop (ranks 7 and 8); Arda would still sit above Eka ($150M). Modal ($750M Series D at $15.75B, Accel lead) is not ranked: it was announced on Oct 14, before Oct 17, and was only re-reported on Oct 19–22. DeepSeek's pre-money is $74B in two outlets, against $74–75B in an aggregator.
4. Sector and region distribution
Chapter 3 ranked the week's largest deals by size; this chapter re-cuts the same tracked set by sector, region and stage, and adds the mid-size rounds beneath the Top 10.
Of the $18.44B in announced or reported rounds that this report tracks, 81.2% is one reported deal (DeepSeek). Without it, the announced $3.46B splits 53.0% applications to 47.0% infrastructure, and 76.9% went to US-headquartered companies.
Counting rule. Fourteen deals: ten announced with an amount (Tenstorrent, Legora, ASI, Pigment, Arda, Whop, Eka Robotics, Tractian, Blacksmith, Daytona), one reported (DeepSeek), two in talks (OpenAI, Fireworks AI), and Higgsfield, announced with no amount. Only announced and reported amounts are summed: 3,461 + 14,980 = $18,441M. OpenAI's up to $30,000M is excluded; a headline sum would be $48,441M. Modal (Oct 14) is before the window and is not counted. Two conflicts: Arda is $230M in CNBC but a $160M Series A in Fortune (using $160M lowers totals by $70M); Whop is $200M in its own release but $205M in WorkNation. We follow the first source in each case.
4.1 Sector split: deals this report tracks (not the whole market)
| Sector | Deals counted | $M announced + reported | Share | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frontier labs | DeepSeek (reported); OpenAI (in talks) | 14,980 | 81.2% | — |
| AI chips | Tenstorrent | 1,500 | 8.1% | — |
| Inference, AI cloud and dev tools | Daytona, Blacksmith; Fireworks AI (talks, no amount) | 126 (60 + 66) | 0.7% | ; |
| Applications (legal, commerce, finance) | Legora, Whop, Pigment | 1,000 (550 + 200 + 250) | 5.4% | ; |
| Manufacturing, physical AI, robotics | Arda, Tractian, ASI, Eka Robotics | 835 (230 + 130 + 325 + 150) | 4.5% | ; |
| Video | Higgsfield (no amount) | 0 | 0.0% | — |
| Total | 14 deals | 18,441 | 99.9% (rounding) | 14,980 + 1,500 + 126 + 1,000 + 835 |
Excluding DeepSeek, the announced total is $3,461M: chips 43.3%, applications 28.9%, physical AI 24.1%, inference and dev tools 3.6% (shares sum to 99.9% by rounding). Placement calls: Blacksmith runs CI jobs on its own servers, so it sits with Daytona's agent sandboxes as developer infrastructure; Pigment is finance-planning software; ASI (prediction for infrastructure and national security) and Eka (dexterous robots) go under physical AI. Whop's AI content is not described in the material; it is counted because the tracked list includes it.
Infrastructure versus applications. Chips plus inference and dev tools are 1,500 + 126 = 1,626, or 47.0% of announced dollars; applications plus physical AI are 1,000 + 835 = 1,835, or 53.0%. Infrastructure is one deal deep: Tenstorrent is 92% of it (1,500 ÷ 1,626). Applications are priced richly on ARR: Whop about 13x, Tractian at most 1.4 ÷ 0.1 = 14x, Pigment at most 2.3 ÷ 0.1 = 23x, Legora at most 8.8 ÷ 0.2 = 44x. Fireworks AI, in talks, would be about 40x its $1B July run rate at $40B, against 17.5x in July (Dealroom).
4.2 Region and stage mix
| Region (HQ) | Deals | $M | Share | Deals counted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US | 11 | 2,661 | 14.4% | Tenstorrent, ASI, Arda, Whop, Eka, Tractian, Blacksmith, Daytona, Higgsfield; in talks: OpenAI, Fireworks AI |
| US and Europe | 1 | 550 | 3.0% | Legora (New York and Stockholm) |
| Europe | 1 | 250 | 1.4% | Pigment (Paris) |
| China | 1 | 14,980 | 81.2% | DeepSeek |
US dollars: 1,500 + 325 + 230 + 200 + 150 + 130 + 66 + 60 = 2,661. Announced-only shares: US 76.9% (2,661 ÷ 3,461), Legora 15.9%, Pigment 7.2%; counting Legora as European, Europe is 800 ÷ 3,461 = 23.1%. No tracked company is MENA-headquartered; the region appears only as capital, with UAE investors and Coatue leading OpenAI's talks. HQ is not stated for Tenstorrent or Fireworks AI, so we treat them as US.
| Stage (10 announced with amount) | Deals | $M | Share of 3,461 | Companies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Series A | 2 | 380 | 11.0% | Arda 230; Eka 150 |
| Series B | 1 | 60 | 1.7% | Daytona |
| Series C | 2 | 391 | 11.3% | ASI 325; Blacksmith 66 |
| Series D–E | 4 | 2,380 | 68.8% | Tenstorrent 1,500; Legora 550; Whop 200; Tractian 130 |
| Not stated | 1 | 250 | 7.2% | Pigment |
The ten amounts have a median of (200 + 230) ÷ 2 = $215M and a mean of 3,461 ÷ 10 ≈ $346M. Growth rounds hold the dollars (4 of 10 deals, 68.8%), yet all five early-stage rounds priced at $1B or more: Arda $1.5B, Eka $1.45B, Daytona $1B, Blacksmith $1B (up from $550M in August, about 1.8x), ASI $3B.
4.3 The inference-chip valuation wave
PitchBook counted $4.18B raised by inference-chip startups across 22 deals through Aug 28, on track to pass 2025's record of $5.21B from 31 deals. The 2026 median pre-money valuation is $1.77B, against $194M in 2024: about 9x. Etched raised $1B across two rounds in July and August, the second at $21B; Cerebras raised a $1B Series H at about $23B before its May IPO; Positron AI raised an $875M Series C in September. These data end before the week and exclude Tenstorrent.
Tenstorrent's $6.2B post-money implies a $4.7B pre-money (6.2 − 1.5), or 4.7 ÷ 1.77 ≈ 2.7x the 2026 median and about 30% of Etched's valuation (6.2 ÷ 21). Bloomberg (via Quartz) reports it spoke to Intel and Qualcomm about a sale and chose to raise. PitchBook warns that high valuations raise the exit price and narrow the buyer field; Cerebras fell more than 61% from its post-IPO peak, and SoftBank bought Graphcore for about $500M, once valued at $2.8B. Software platforms re-priced as well. For context only, Modal announced $750M at $15.75B on Oct 14, outside the window and not counted, up from $4.65B in May: 15.75 ÷ 4.65 ≈ 3.4x.
5. M&A and exits
Chapter 4 split the week's financings by sector and region; the same week also produced a short list of acquisitions, led by Salesforce's cash takeover of Braze.
5.1 Acquisitions in the window
Only deals announced Oct 17–23 count as window deals. Two rows are context: SpaceX closed Cursor on Aug 14, and Omron announced OnLogic on Oct 12–13; both put new numbers into the window.
| Acquirer | Target | Price | Status (as of Oct 24) | Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce | Braze | $47.50/share cash; EV about $5.66B | Announced; close from Feb 2027 | Oct 20 (signed Oct 19) |
| OpenAI | Orchestra Bio | not disclosed | Announced | Oct 20 |
| Kapital | Woz | $30M, cash and stock | Agreed (company release) | Oct 19 |
| Newforma | Lumi AI | not disclosed | Announced | Oct 21 (article date) |
| Omron | OnLogic | $675M, reported | Announced pre-window; close about Jan 2027 | Oct 12–13; price Oct 19–20 |
| SpaceX | Cursor | $60B implied equity value | Completed | Aug 14 (context) |
Salesforce–Braze is the one large window deal. J.P. Morgan advised Salesforce and Qatalyst advised Braze. The offer is a 58% premium to the Oct 19 close of $30.04 (47.50 ÷ 30.04 − 1 = 58.1%). Braze's board approved unanimously, and a $300M termination fee applies under certain conditions (according to Tickeron). The deal needs a vote of more than half of Braze's shares, with 5.3% already pledged, plus antitrust clearance. It is announced, not completed. Simply Wall St (via Yahoo Finance) calls it a $5.7B all-stock deal. We follow the cash terms, which come from the merger agreement Braze filed on Oct 20 and CMSWire's report of Salesforce's announcement.
The AI link is real but indirect. Braze sells BrazeAI decisioning on top of a messaging engine, and Salesforce plans to join it to Marketing Cloud, Data 360 and Agentforce. Braze's fiscal 2026 revenue (year to Jan 31, 2026) was $738.2M, up 24.4%, so $5.66B ÷ $0.7382B ≈ 7.7x trailing revenue. Salesforce's disclosed 2026 buys of Contentful, Fin and Braze total about $10.8B, so the first two cost about $5.1B (10.8 − 5.66).
Omron–OnLogic has a price conflict. SemiMedia and Metrology News give $675M enterprise value. Superpower Daily says Omron's own announcement did not disclose a price. We treat $675M as reported, not company-confirmed. Vermont Public cites revenue above $150M last year, so the price is at most 675 ÷ 150 = 4.5x revenue.
The rest are small. Woz is a Y Combinator-backed coding-agent team; Orchestra extends OpenAI's Rosalind life-sciences suite; Lumi AI sold after failing to raise a $10–20M Series A despite triple-digit ARR growth. Automation Today lists Automation Anywhere–Boost.ai, HCLSoftware–Robotiq.ai and Barndoor–Diaphora; dates and prices are not stated, so we do not count them.
5.2 SpaceX–Cursor: one deal, three measures
SpaceX's Q3 release of Oct 20 gave the accounting for a deal that closed on Aug 14, 2026 (status: completed).
| Measure (SpaceX, Oct 20 release) | Value |
|---|---|
| Implied equity value | $60B |
| GAAP purchase consideration | $42.5B |
| Equity awards for post-acquisition service | $23.4B, subject to forfeiture |
The three values measure different things, so do not add them. 42.5 + 23.4 = 65.9, not 60, and the material does not reconcile the gap. The $60B is the agreed headline. The $42.5B is the price in the books. The $23.4B is a retention cost, expensed over time as stock compensation.
The cost is already visible: SI segment operating profit of $431M is after $1,217M of Cursor stock compensation. Cursor added $608M of revenue from Aug 14 to Sep 30, which annualizes to about $4.7B (608 ÷ 47 × 365, our extrapolation). New Market Pitch estimates Cursor's run rate at about $4B in May, which puts $60B at roughly 15x. ION Analytics dates the deal to June and puts it at $54.75B. We follow the company's $60B and Aug 14 close. The June date matches SpaceX exercising its purchase option.
The window's AI M&A was strategic and mostly small: one $5.66B cash deal, plus teams and tools bought for tens of millions or undisclosed sums. The year's largest AI deal, Cursor, only had its accounting disclosed this week.
5.3 What strategic buyers are buying
| ION Analytics (Mergermarket data) | Value |
|---|---|
| AI M&A and fundraising volume, Jan–Sep 2026 | $450bn, 3x a year earlier |
| Funding rounds' share of that volume | 74%, about $333bn; M&A about $117bn (our arithmetic) |
| Traditional M&A share of dollar volume, Jun–Sep | 73% |
| Nvidia–Hugging Face (Sept) / AMD–World Labs (Sept) | $12.93bn / $8.2bn |
Money is moving from model-builder rounds to acquisitions of working businesses, though funding rounds are still about 60% of deal count. Ajay Agrawal (via ION) sorts buyers into three groups: algorithms and talent (World Labs), customer bases and workflows, and "pieces of the puzzle" (Hugging Face, Listen Labs). In the window, Braze fits the second group. Orchestra and Woz fit the first. Lumi's founder framed his sale as buy over build.
Financial buyers are not the price setters. ION says sponsors have yet to become major AI buyers. L40° (citing PitchBook) puts the median EV/EBITDA of SaaS private-equity deals at 11.7x in H1 2026, down from 20.4x in 2025. It cites Kroll for a 20.2x median in disclosed strategic software deals. The two samples are not directly comparable. Strategics can pay more, and Braze's 58% premium fits that.
Exit counts remain weak. PitchBook data (via TheVentureCity) show Q3 2026 exit value of $185.2B from 666 exits, the fewest since Q2 2020, and expect strategic M&A to carry more liquidity than IPOs. For the IPO route, see Chapter 6.
6. Frontier labs and the IPO window
Chapter 5 covered the deal accounting around SpaceX and Cursor; this chapter asks how the largest labs fund themselves and which exit each one is on.
6.1 Lab by lab: valuation, status, exit plan
| Company | Latest valuation | Status | Exit plan | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | $965B post-money, $65B Series H, May 28, 2026 (company). IPO talk: $2T target vs ~$1.5T (reported) | Draft S-1 submitted confidentially Jun 1, 2026 (company); no public S-1 confirmed in the material as of Oct 24 | Nasdaq; roadshow from the week of Nov 9 (reported) | SimianX; Reuters |
| OpenAI | $852B post-money, $122B round, Mar 31, 2026. Talks at $1.2T–$1.4T (reported) | Confidential S-1 announced Jun 8, 2026 (company): "not decided on timing yet" | 2027, per CFO Sarah Friar to staff (CNBC) | SimianX; CNBC |
| SpaceX (incl. xAI) | $135 IPO price = $1.77T; closed $146.03 on Oct 16 | Public (Nasdaq: SPCX) since Jun 12, 2026 | Done | SimianX |
| Moonshot AI | $35B post-money, $3.5B Series F, Jul 29 (Bloomberg). ~$50B pre-IPO round (reported) | Confidential Hong Kong filing (reported; company declines comment) | Q1 2027, raising up to $5B (Bloomberg) or ~$3B (Reuters) | Asia Business Daily; StockAnalysis |
OpenAI has two marks. The closed round is $852B; the $1.2T and ~$1.4T figures are reported talks, and no new round has been announced (status as of Oct 18). We follow $852B as the valuation and treat the rest as unconfirmed (this week's round is in Chapter 3).
Moonshot has two marks as well. The $35B round is closed. The ~$50B figure comes from a reported pre-IPO round, which Asia Business Daily calls the "most recent round", citing Bloomberg. We follow $35B as the closed price. SpaceX is the only lab-like business already public. Its Oct 20 release shows the AI segment (Super Intelligence, SI) as the largest:
| Segment revenue, Q3 | 2026 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| SI | $7,560M | $813M |
| Connectivity | $5,248M | $3,097M |
| Space | $1,767M | $1,666M |
| Total | $14,575M | $5,576M |
SI is 7,560 ÷ 14,575 ≈ 52% of revenue and earned $431M of operating income after $1.2B of Cursor-related share compensation. SI capex was $16.4B of the $19.6B total, and TechCrunch reports Q4 capex guidance of $35B–$40B. The stock is 146.03 ÷ 135 ≈ 8% above its IPO price.
6.2 What Anthropic's S-1 numbers show
These figures come from a draft prospectus reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, not from a company statement. They are "reported".
| Metric | H1 2025 | H1 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $1.1B | $16.3B | WSJ via ANI |
| Net loss | $13B | $80.7B | Reuters |
| Compute and infrastructure spend | $2.3B | ~$9B | Reuters |
- Revenue is 16.3 ÷ 1.1 ≈ 15× last year's half. Reuters gives Q1 $4.6B, Q2 $11.6B and Q3 $16.8B, so Q2/Q1 ≈ 2.5× but Q3/Q2 = 16.8 ÷ 11.6 ≈ +45%. The Financial Times says Q2 was $11.5B; we follow Reuters' $11.6B. Q3 came from an Oct 14 investor meeting, not the prospectus.
- The loss is mostly accounting. $72B is a charge for higher fair value of convertible bonds, so 80.7 − 72 ≈ $8.7B is the rest. For 2025, Reuters reports a $42B net loss and an operating loss of ~$8.1B on $4.6B of revenue.
- Commitments differ by source. WSJ says infrastructure commitments could exceed $600B, with up to $150B more under discussion (600 + 150 = $750B). Reuters says at least $518B over a decade, about 80% non-cancelable. We follow $518B as the committed floor and $750B as the ceiling. WSJ's cloud line is about $450B, of which Google Cloud is $111B, AWS $110B and Microsoft $31B (sum $252B; the remaining ~$198B is not itemised in the material).
- Concentration: about one-fifth of H1 revenue came from two customers.
At $1.5T–$2T, Anthropic would be priced at 22×–30× annualized Q3 revenue (16.8 × 4 = $67.2B; our estimate), against the 20.5× run-rate multiple of its May private round (965 ÷ 47).
6.3 Sentiment and timing
Anthropic's own date has moved. WSJ reported a shift from October to November. Economic Times says a public S-1 could land as early as Friday Oct 23, with marketing in the week of Nov 9. SimianX puts it at about Oct 26. Confidential filers must go public at least 15 days before the roadshow, so Nov 9 − 15 days = Oct 25. The material shows no filing yet, so treat all dates as plans.
The valuation target is slipping. Reuters says some investors weigh ~$1.5T after the Q3 growth slowdown. 22V Research called a range starting at $1.5T against an earlier $2T "disappointing". ION quotes another buyer: "No chance in hell it comes anywhere near USD 2tn".
The market is thin. Kalshi (Oct 19) gave Anthropic 75% odds of announcing an IPO in 2026 and OpenAI 3%; US IPO count is down 33% year on year (Renaissance Capital). Fortune cites a 32% first-day fall for Korea's Elice, and Economic Times says Firmus shelved its listing. CIBC says the semiconductor index lost ~$1.6T in a six-day streak to Oct 14 and notes September's Fed hike. ION reports the Nasdaq 100 down 6.5% since Oct 6 and data-centre debt issuance of $23B in September, down over 50%.
The window is open for one deal. Anthropic's result will set the price for others, and it will be tested by NYC Comptroller Mark Levine's pause request and investor doubts on open-weight competition.
7. Most active investors
Chapter 6 traced the frontier labs' route to the public markets; this chapter asks who wrote the cheques in the 14 deals tracked in this report: ten announced with an amount, DeepSeek (reported), OpenAI (in talks), and Fireworks AI and Higgsfield (no amount). Counts come from these deals only, not the whole market.
7.1 Who led and who joined
A lead is stated for 10 of the 14 deals. It is not stated for Pigment, DeepSeek, the Higgsfield extension, or Fireworks AI (still in early talks).
| Investor | Deals | Deal: role | Type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sequoia | 2 | Whop: co-lead with Shopify Ventures; Blacksmith: lead | Financial | Whop release; TFN |
| a16z | 2 | Eka Robotics: co-lead with F-Prime; ASI: participant | Financial | Fortune; Tech Startups |
| Accel | 2 | Arda: co-lead; Legora: participant (existing) | Financial | CNBC via UA.NEWS; Legora release |
| General Catalyst | 2 | Tractian, Legora: participant (existing) | Financial | Tractian release |
| Y Combinator | 2 | Tractian, Blacksmith: participant | Financial | — |
| Atreides | 1 | Legora: lead | Financial | Legora release |
| Nvidia | 1 | Higgsfield extension: participant | Strategic | Bloomberg via Oninvest |
| TCV | 1 | Higgsfield extension: participant | Financial | — |
| ICONIQ | 1 | Legora: participant (existing) | Financial | — |
| UAE investors, Coatue | 1 | OpenAI: reported lead | Sovereign-linked / financial | CNBC |
| CATL, Tencent | 1 | DeepSeek: among the largest (reported); lead not stated | Strategic | Reuters via Central Oregon Daily |
| Single-lead firms | 1 each | Altimeter, Khosla (Arda); Sapphire (Tractian); FirstMark Growth (Daytona); Spark (ASI); Trace Capital, Innovation X (Tenstorrent) | Financial | ;; Tenstorrent release |
Pigment's investors are not stated in the material.
Five firms appear in 2 deals each: Sequoia, a16z, Accel, General Catalyst and Y Combinator. Only Sequoia leads twice. Of the 10 led deals, 9 have different lead names, and Sequoia is the one repeat (2 of 10). Accel also led Modal's $750M Series D, but that was announced on Oct 14, before the window, so it is not counted.

Track record is a different measure from activity. The Strebulaev-Jackson AI ranking (data to Aug 31, 2026; published Oct 17) puts a16z first at 22,509 points, ahead of Lightspeed at 14,422 and Menlo at 13,464. The gap is 22,509 − 14,422 = 8,087.
7.2 The Nvidia effect: equity plus supply
On Oct 23, 2026 Higgsfield announced investment from Nvidia and TCV, an extension of its August Series B ($400 million, led by DST Global, $5.4 billion valuation). The extension's size and valuation are undisclosed (status: announced). One aggregator calls the August round an "$8 billion B-round". We follow $400 million, which the other pages and that page's own body state.
Fireworks AI shows the pattern. Nvidia was one of 17 participants in its July Series D ($1.505 billion at $17.5 billion), led by Atreides, Index Ventures and TCV. Business Insider reported on Oct 20 that it is in early talks at $30–40 billion, with no investors named (status: reported). So TCV and Atreides recur: TCV in Higgsfield and Fireworks, Atreides in Legora and Fireworks.
The supply side matters as much. According to Dealroom, summarising The Information, Nvidia is in talks to invest hundreds of millions in Firmus, the Australian GPU cloud that pulled its IPO. Firmus is now trying to raise at least $2 billion privately. Nvidia joined its last three rounds and in June agreed to backstop its purchase of at least 170,000 Rubin and Blackwell GPUs, an estimated $15 billion (status: reported; the amount could change). (Firmus is not a tracked deal.)
In Europe, Trending Topics counts 26 companies Nvidia backed in three years plus 13 newly announced stakes. Jensen Huang cited about $8 billion deployed in the past year plus $2 billion new, $10 billion in all, without splitting equity from infrastructure (date not stated).
Nvidia touches 3 of the 14 tracked deals: an investor in Higgsfield, an existing investor in Fireworks AI, and a customer of Daytona. Sequoia is the only firm to lead more than one of the 10 led deals. Nvidia's cheque sizes stay undisclosed.
7.3 Sovereign and strategic money
OpenAI (status: reported, in talks). Reuters said on Oct 19 that SoftBank, Abu Dhabi-based MGX and other backers were in talks on about $30 billion at over $1.4 trillion. CNBC reported on Oct 22 that UAE investors are leading alongside Coatue at $1.25 trillion pre-money, with signatures sought by the end of the following week. OpenAI is also negotiating a commercial deal for UAE compute. Bloomberg confirms the cut: 1.40 − 1.25 = $150 billion. CNBC does not name the UAE investors, so we do not equate them with MGX. The March round was $852 billion post-money; 1.25 ÷ 0.852 ≈ 1.47×.
DeepSeek (status: reported). Reuters said on Oct 22 that it raised about 100 billion yuan ($14.98 billion) from over 15 investors, including GigaDevice, Meituan and Geely. CATL and Tencent, both existing shareholders, were among the biggest. Boyu, CPE, Legend and IDG also took part. Pre-money was 500 billion yuan, and details could still change. Roic News puts it at $74 billion pre-money, so about 74 + 15 = $89 billion post. An Omdia analyst notes that the investors are all Chinese and supply-chain vendors.
Corporate venture arms. Eight of the 14 deals name a corporate or strategic investor: Whop (Shopify Ventures), Legora (Salesforce Ventures), Daytona (Qualcomm Ventures, Samsung Next, Okta Ventures), Tractian (Bosch Ventures), Tenstorrent (Cadence Ventures, Sandisk), Higgsfield (Nvidia), Blacksmith (GV) and DeepSeek. Only Whop has a corporate co-lead. Strategics mostly follow a financial lead, buying proximity to the product, not control of the round.
8. Reading the flow of money
Chapters 2–7 sized the week's deals, split them by sector and stage, and traced who funds them and how they exit. This chapter reads them together and adds a dated watch-list. It uses only facts from earlier chapters.
8.1 What the week adds up to
Money is concentrated in a few names. CB Insights counted 299 of 6,913 Q3 deals as mega-rounds, and they took about 80% of the dollars. In this week's tracked set, OpenAI is 61.9% of the $48,441M headline and DeepSeek 30.9% of the announced and reported $18,441M; announced rounds are 7.1% of the headline. Counting dollars therefore measures two press reports more than the week's closed deals.
Valuations are repricing in both directions. Mid-stage companies step up two to three times, while the largest private mark was cut during talks.
| Company | Prior valuation | Now | Change | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whop | $1.6B (Feb 2026) | $5.1B | 3.2x | Announced |
| Tenstorrent | $2.6B (2024) | $6.2B | 2.4x | Announced |
| Tractian | $720M | $1.4B | 1.9x | Announced |
| Blacksmith | $550M | $1B | 1.8x | Announced |
| Legora | $5.6B | $8.8B | 1.6x | Announced |
| OpenAI | $852B (Mar 2026) | $1.25T pre-money | 1.47x | In talks |
| DeepSeek | 350.88B yuan (June) | 500B yuan pre-money | 1.43x | Reported |
| Fireworks AI | $17.5B (July) | $30–40B | 1.7–2.3x | In talks |
Bases differ: some rows compare a new post-money with an earlier post-money and some a new pre-money with a prior post-money, so read the multiples as direction, not precision. OpenAI shows the risk: Reuters had $1.4T on Oct 19 and CNBC $1.25T on Oct 22, a $150B difference inside four days.
Revenue multiples carry the applications. Legora is priced at up to 44x ARR, Pigment at most 23x, Tractian at most 14x and Whop about 13x. Fireworks AI would be about 40x its run rate at $40B, against 17.5x in July. These are upper bounds from stated revenue floors, not audited multiples.
Strategic capital follows financial leads. Eight of 14 deals name a corporate investor, but only Whop has a corporate co-lead. Nvidia touches 3 of 14 as investor or customer, with undisclosed cheque sizes, so chip supply and equity are hard to separate.
Exits run through acquisitions, not listings. PitchBook put Q3 exit value at $185.2B from 666 exits, the fewest since Q2 2020. ION found M&A was 73% of AI deal dollars from June to September. Braze (about 7.7x trailing revenue) shows a strategic paying a premium for a working customer base. The IPO route depends on Anthropic: its draft shows a $2T target against about $1.5T under discussion.
8.2 What it means by reader
| Reader | What changed | Implication | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Founders | Growth-stage rounds at $1B+ priced on ARR; early-stage companies also reached $1B | Raise on revenue evidence, and expect pricing to track revenue multiples that investors can still cut | — |
| Investors | Two-thirds of announced dollars sit in Series D–E; OpenAI's mark fell during talks | Treat reported valuations as ranges; check whether a figure is pre- or post-money and company-confirmed | — |
| Corporate buyers | Strategics paid a 58% premium for Braze; sponsors are not yet major AI buyers | Buy workflows and customers now; expect competition from AI labs buying small teams | — |
The week's money was concentrated, partly unconfirmed, and priced on revenue that exit markets have yet to test.
8.3 Key dates
Dates already past on Oct 24, 2026 are marked "In effect".
