AI Funding and M&A Brief · Oct 17–23, 2026

AI Funding Was Loud at the Top and Thin Beneath It

14 deals tracked between Oct 17 and Oct 23, 2026, judged against Oct 24: ten announced rounds with a disclosed amount, DeepSeek reported, OpenAI in talks and two with no amount, plus the week's acquisitions. Every figure carries its status: announced, reported, in talks, estimate or completed.

$48,441MHeadline sum of the 12 tracked deals with an amount: $3,461M announced, plus $14,980M reported (DeepSeek), plus up to $30,000M in talks (OpenAI). Only 7.1% is announced.
Read with care. The tracked totals are not the market total, and OpenAI (in talks) and DeepSeek (reported) are unconfirmed press reports, not company announcements.

01The verdict

Two unfinished deals make up most of the headline, and the tracked set is not the market

Between Oct 17 and Oct 23, 2026, AI financing was loud at the top and thin beneath it. Pick a conclusion to see the evidence behind it, then check how the headline is built.

Two unfinished deals make up most of the headline

Ten announced rounds with a disclosed amount total $3,461M. Adding DeepSeek's reported ~$14.98B gives $18,441M, and OpenAI's talks for up to $30B bring the headline to $48,441M, of which only 7.1% is announced. The tracked set is not the market total.

Amounts and step-ups

The three largest in detail

1.47x In talks
CNBC (Oct 22): up to $30B at $1.25T excluding new capital, UAE investors leading alongside Coatue; signatures sought by the end of the following week, final size open. Step-up 1,250 ÷ 852 ≈ +47% on March's $852B; at $1.4T it would have been +64%.
The mark moved once inside four days
Reuters said above $1.4T on Oct 19; Bloomberg describes a $150B cut in the final stage and says details could change. We follow the later figure.
Who is in the talks
Reuters (Oct 19): SoftBank, Abu Dhabi-based MGX and other backers. CNBC (Oct 22): UAE investors with Coatue, not named, so we do not equate them with MGX.
Also on the table
OpenAI is negotiating a commercial deal for more UAE computing capacity. IPO timing is covered in Module 06.
1.43x Reported
Reuters: about 100B yuan ($14.98B) from more than 15 investors, including GigaDevice, Meituan and Geely; CATL and Tencent, both existing shareholders, were among the biggest. The round doubled the 50B yuan target.
Pre-money 500B yuan against 350.88B in June
About $74B pre-money and about $89B post (600B yuan). Terms are "not ironclad" and there is no company statement.
Who put the money in
Boyu, CPE, Legend and IDG also took part. An Omdia analyst notes that the investors are all Chinese and supply-chain vendors.
How the dollars are derived
100B yuan at the Reuters rate of 6.6749 gives $14.98B. The prior mark was 350.88B yuan from the June round, which raised $7.4B.
2.4x Announced
Tenstorrent announced $1.5B at $6.2B post-money on Oct 19, led by Trace Capital and Innovation X, with Fidelity, Morgan Stanley and Sandisk taking part. 6.2 ÷ 2.6 ≈ 2.4x the 2024 round.
Raised instead of selling
Bloomberg (via Quartz): Tenstorrent held sale talks with Intel and Qualcomm earlier this year and chose to raise.
Against the inference-chip market
$4.7B pre-money (6.2 − 1.5) is about 2.7x the 2026 median of $1.77B and about 30% of Etched's $21B (PitchBook).
Strategic names on the cap table
Cadence Ventures and Sandisk are named among its investors; strategics mostly follow a financial lead (see Module 07).

Below the cut-off or without a disclosed amount

Blacksmith Announced
$66M Series C at $1B (prior $550M); Sequoia lead. Date not stated.
Daytona Announced
$60M Series B at $1B; FirstMark Growth lead; Oct 20. Prior valuation not stated.
Higgsfield Announced
Nvidia and TCV extend an August Series B; amount and valuation undisclosed; Oct 23.
Fireworks AI In talks
Amount not stated; talks at $30–40B against $17.5B in July (Business Insider).
How sure is each row? Tenstorrent, Legora, Whop and Tractian published their own releases and Arda gave its figures to CNBC. ASI, Pigment and Eka Robotics appear only in one Tech Startups roundup, so treat them as leads to verify. Modal's $750M Series D (Oct 14) is before the window and is not ranked.
04Sector and region

Chips and growth rounds took the announced dollars, and the US took three quarters of them

The same tracked deals, re-cut by sector, region and round stage. Shares are of the base shown under each view, not of the whole market.

How to read the split

47.0% / 53.0%
Infrastructure versus applications
Chips plus inference and developer tools are $1,626M; applications plus physical AI are $1,835M. Tenstorrent is 92% of the infrastructure side.
$215M median
Round size, ten announced rounds
Mean about $346M (3,461 ÷ 10). Growth rounds hold the dollars: 4 of 10 deals, 68.8%.
5 of 5
Early-stage rounds priced at $1B or more
Arda $1.5B, Eka $1.45B, Daytona $1B, Blacksmith $1B (up from $550M, about 1.8x) and ASI $3B.
At most 44x ARR
Applications priced on revenue
Legora 44x, Pigment 23x, Tractian 14x, Whop about 13x: upper bounds from stated revenue floors, not audited multiples.

The inference-chip valuation wave

$4.18B
Raised by inference-chip startups, 22 deals through Aug 28
On track to pass 2025's record of $5.21B from 31 deals (PitchBook; data end before the week and exclude Tenstorrent).
$1.77B
2026 median pre-money valuation
Against $194M in 2024, about 9x. Etched's second round was at $21B; Cerebras raised at about $23B before its May IPO.
2.7x
Tenstorrent's pre-money against that median
$6.2B post-money implies $4.7B pre-money (6.2 − 1.5), about 30% of Etched's valuation. Bloomberg: it chose to raise rather than sell.
Why it matters. PitchBook warns that high valuations raise the exit price and narrow the buyer field: Cerebras fell more than 61% from its post-IPO peak, and SoftBank bought Graphcore for about $500M, once valued at $2.8B.

Salesforce–Braze terms
A 58% premium to the Oct 19 close of $30.04. Braze's board approved unanimously; a $300M termination fee applies under certain conditions (Tickeron). Advisers: J.P. Morgan for Salesforce, Qatalyst for Braze.
What still has to happen
A vote of more than half of Braze's shares, with 5.3% already pledged, plus antitrust clearance. Announced, not completed. One outlet calls it all-stock; the merger agreement filed on Oct 20 says cash.
What Salesforce pays for
Braze's fiscal 2026 revenue was $738.2M (+24.4%), so $5.66B is about 7.7x trailing revenue. The AI link is indirect: BrazeAI decisioning joins Marketing Cloud, Data 360 and Agentforce.

Sources: CMSWire, Braze merger agreement (Oct 20), Tickeron, Simply Wall St via Yahoo Finance, SemiMedia, Metrology News, Superpower Daily (says Omron did not disclose a price, so $675M stays reported), PR Newswire. Woz is a Y Combinator-backed coding-agent team; Orchestra extends OpenAI's Rosalind life-sciences suite; Lumi AI sold after failing to raise a $10–20M Series A.

Three values that measure different things. 42.5 + 23.4 = 65.9, not 60, and the material does not reconcile the gap. The $60B is the agreed headline, the $42.5B is the price in the books, and the $23.4B is a retention cost expensed over time as stock compensation. Do not add them.
$608M
Cursor revenue, Aug 14 to Sep 30
Annualizes to about $4.7B (608 ÷ 47 × 365, our extrapolation). New Market Pitch put the run rate near $4B in May, so $60B is roughly 15x.
$431M
SI segment operating profit, after $1,217M of Cursor stock compensation
The cost is already visible in the Oct 20 release.
Dates and prices differ by source
ION Analytics dates the deal to June at $54.75B. We follow the company's $60B and Aug 14 close; June matches SpaceX exercising its purchase option.

Status: Completed on Aug 14, 2026; accounting disclosed in SpaceX's Q3 release of Oct 20 (via Unite.AI).

$185.2B

Three kinds of buyer
Ajay Agrawal (via ION): algorithms and talent (World Labs), customer bases and workflows, and "pieces of the puzzle" (Hugging Face, Listen Labs). In the window Braze fits the second; Orchestra and Woz fit the first.
Big September deals
Nvidia–Hugging Face $12.93bn and AMD–World Labs $8.2bn (ION). Money is moving from model-builder rounds to acquisitions of working businesses.
Financial buyers are not price setters
Sponsors have yet to become major AI buyers. Median EV/EBITDA of SaaS private-equity deals was 11.7x in H1 2026 against 20.4x in 2025; Kroll shows 20.2x for strategic software deals (samples not directly comparable).
The window's AI M&A was strategic and mostly small: one $5.66B cash deal, plus teams and tools bought for tens of millions or undisclosed sums. Strategics can pay more, and Braze's 58% premium fits that.

Accel also led Modal's $750M Series D, but it was announced on Oct 14, before the window, so it is not counted. Pigment's investors are not stated.

The Nvidia effect: equity plus supply

Higgsfield Announced Oct 23
Nvidia and TCV extend the August Series B ($400M, led by DST Global, $5.4B valuation). The extension's size and valuation are undisclosed.
Fireworks AI In talks
Nvidia was one of 17 participants in the July Series D ($1.505B at $17.5B; Atreides, Index Ventures and TCV led). Early talks at $30–40B, no investors named (Business Insider, Oct 20). TCV and Atreides recur.
Firmus (not tracked) Reported
Nvidia is in talks to invest hundreds of millions in the GPU cloud that pulled its IPO; Firmus seeks at least $2B privately. Nvidia backstopped a GPU purchase estimated at $15B (Dealroom, citing The Information).
Nvidia touches 3 of the 14 tracked deals: investor in Higgsfield, existing investor in Fireworks AI and customer of Daytona. Cheque sizes stay undisclosed. In Europe, Trending Topics counts 26 Nvidia-backed companies in three years plus 13 new stakes; Jensen Huang cited about $10B in all, without splitting equity from infrastructure.

Sovereign and strategic money

OpenAI In talks
Reuters (Oct 19): SoftBank, Abu Dhabi-based MGX and others in talks on about $30B at over $1.4T. CNBC (Oct 22): UAE investors lead with Coatue at $1.25T pre-money, signatures sought by the end of the following week. CNBC does not name the UAE investors, so we do not equate them with MGX.
DeepSeek Reported
About 100B yuan ($14.98B) from over 15 investors, including GigaDevice, Meituan and Geely; Boyu, CPE, Legend and IDG also took part. An Omdia analyst notes the investors are all Chinese and supply-chain vendors.
Corporate venture arms
Whop (Shopify Ventures), Legora (Salesforce Ventures), Daytona (Qualcomm Ventures, Samsung Next, Okta Ventures), Tractian (Bosch Ventures), Tenstorrent (Cadence Ventures, Sandisk), Higgsfield (Nvidia), Blacksmith (GV) and DeepSeek.
08Reading the flow of money

Money was concentrated, partly unconfirmed, and priced on revenue that exit markets have yet to test

What the week adds up to, what each kind of reader should do, and the dated watch-list. This module uses only facts from the modules above.

Concentrated in a few names

~80%
of Q3 dollars went to 299 of 6,913 deals (CB Insights).
61.9% / 30.9%
OpenAI's share of the $48,441M headline, and DeepSeek's share of the $18,441M announced plus reported. Counting dollars measures two press reports more than closed deals.

Repricing in both directions

2x to 3x
Mid-stage companies stepped up two to three times (Whop 3.2x, Tenstorrent 2.4x).
-$150B
The largest private mark was cut during talks: OpenAI $1.4T on Oct 19 (Reuters), $1.25T on Oct 22 (CNBC).

Exits run through acquisitions

73%
M&A share of AI deal dollars, Jun–Sep (ION). Braze at about 7.7x trailing revenue shows a premium for a working customer base.
$185.2B
Q3 exit value from 666 exits, the fewest since Q2 2020. The IPO route depends on Anthropic.

Bases differ: some rows compare a new post-money with an earlier post-money and some a new pre-money with a prior post-money, so read the multiples as direction, not precision. Revenue multiples are upper bounds: Legora 44x, Pigment 23x, Tractian 14x, Whop about 13x ARR.

What it means by reader

What changed
Growth-stage rounds at $1B+ were priced on ARR, and early-stage companies also reached $1B.
Implication
Raise on revenue evidence, and expect pricing to track revenue multiples that investors can still cut.
Evidence
Legora at most 44x ARR, Whop about 13x, Blacksmith up about 1.8x from August.
What changed
Two-thirds of announced dollars sit in Series D–E; OpenAI's mark fell during talks.
Implication
Treat reported valuations as ranges; check whether a figure is pre- or post-money and company-confirmed.
Evidence
$1.4T on Oct 19 against $1.25T on Oct 22; Series D–E hold 68.8% of the $3,461M announced.
What changed
Strategics paid a 58% premium for Braze; sponsors are not yet major AI buyers.
Implication
Buy workflows and customers now, and expect competition from AI labs buying small teams.
Evidence
Braze at $47.50 a share, about 7.7x trailing revenue; Orchestra and Woz bought by labs and startups.
